Is it better to stay away from LA and NYC as your build your resume and video? That is an individual decision. A better question is are your professional, reliable, have the talent, skills, training and tools to compete and survive?
There are plenty of opportunities to build your video, to make mistakes and to learn outside of the two largest production markets. There are also opportunities in those markets.
So, are your studying? Are you growing as talent? Are you getting auditions and call backs? Are your doing theater, ultra and micro budget films, going to school?
And do you have the resources (money) to live for one to five years in one of the two most expensive cities in America while you work hard to hone your craft and build a career?
Are you a positive thinker? Or do you have a strong positive religious or spiritual faith (they are not the same thing)?
Do you have others already living in any market where you can make a living with your talents (far from limited to the big two in America or the big ten in the world)? Do you have a network in place? Or will others relocate with you, bringing the needed support for all of you to succeed?
Is what you do the thing you most passionately want to do with your life?
Do you have a "real" life to all back on, use for stress relief and as a safety-net for your own mental health?
Are your willing to take risks?
Are you willing to travel and change course when opportunity knocks?
Can you make the creative living you love where you are now located?
Are there other important factors in life that keep you where you are? If so, be honest with yourself. You may be better off where you are or moving to where other things you love or need in life are easily found. Theater is everywhere, and film is becoming that way.
Much to consider.
And the decision is no one's but yours.
